A new computer! The thought still amazed me and was still imprinted in bold letters in my mind. Wow. I told Ashley of my newfound gadget. But he didn’t seem too pleased with me.
“But it’s against all morals that we’ve learnt!” He was going on again about my actions.
“Then why would it be placed on my table on Christmas eve?”
“Because tomorrow is Christmas?” He stated the obvious.
“Well the person who gave me should know that I am one who has little patience.” I could even picture him rolling his eyes at me.
“So, have you told your parents?”
“No...Why in heavens name would I want to?”
“Because an unknown person gave it to you?” Oh that. I was totally absorbed by the gift, I didn’t give a second thought to who gave it. I picked up the packaging again. Wrapped in typical brown paper with a ribbon. I peered at the base of the present. I could see a faint watermark that resembled a one-dollar stamp. That is certainly strange. “ Hello?” He broke the silence.
“Hold on a sec.” I brought the present up to the light. I spotted my name in faint letters. “Hah!” I could hear him shriek like a girl. It was definitely mine.
: What? Did you find anything? You almost gave me a heart attack.” I rubbed my eyes from the strain of looking at the faint print.
“It had my name on it. A guarantee chop that it’s mine.”
“Okay, fine. Sorry to doubt you there.”
“Its okay.” Although it wasn’t, the barely visible remnants of the stamp intrigued me but I brushed that aside.
“Still, I think its wrong, a sin actually, to open a present before Christmas.”
“But as my dad would say, Christmas isn’t about presents, it about Jesus.”
“Yeah.” My dad’s reminders do actually stick in my head.” Have you done any of your homework?” He changed the subject.
“That would be a definite no, and I’m guessing you’ve done your assignment and started on your revision for the O’s right?”
“Well…”
“Just say yes, you don’t have a choice.”
“ Yes.” Another thing that amazes me is that Ashley is able to find time to finish his homework and started revising for the O’s as well. I’m sure there’s plenty of time for me to do my homework. It’s just that I have this procrastinating daemon in me. He stops me from doing any homework until the last week of the holidays.
I checked my mail and checked out all the new programmes and the speed of the computer. It was better than perfect. It was greater than brilliant. The most amazing thing that made this computer the best present ever was the music in the iTunes library. I expected it to be without any songs like what a brand new computer would have but the strangest thing was that it had every song on the planet earth. I decided to keep this information from Ashley as he might give me one of his other theories that it was stolen and I would have to give it up to the police. That would be the last thing I wanted to do.
I wanted to sign into MSN messenger, but they had some troubleshoot problem. I checked the time on my computer. It read 25th Dec 2007 at 12pm. I quickly changed it to 6pm 24th Dec 2007. I found it rather odd.
“Pass me the gravy!” My younger sister commanded me. I ignored her and poured the sweet gravy over my roasted chicken meat.
“Did you know about the Black Skis won the Golden Eagles by 21 points?” I directed my question to my dad who was busy getting a bone out from his mouth. He gave me a puzzled look.
“I thought it was tomorrow?” I frowned at the thought. I could have sworn I saw the results on the Yahoo homepage. “Where did you get the new?” Breaking my thoughts.
“The news?” I wanted to slap myself. I almost gave myself away. “The television.” Blurting a lie.
“I was watching Winx Club!” My sister piped in. My mother’s eyes narrowed into mere slits.
“I…mean Ashley’s television.” My mother still had that suspicious look on her face.
“Jordan, I think its high time a talk with you about boys is needed.” I chocked on my food. Not now…
“And about sex.” My sister butted in. I glared at her.
“Ashley’s harmless.” I finally regained my composure. “ This is Singapore mummy! We are in this protected, sanitized bubble that premarital sex or even the notion of it is alien to us.” I spoke on behalf of the youths of Singapore.
I finished my plate in lightspeed and decided to excuse myself before my mum brews up any other weird ideas. I quickly got back into my room, locked the door behind me and opened the Viao again. I decided to name my little gadget. I shall call him…Ski, because the laptop was in a sky blue hue.
“Did you send it to the right address?” My yellow eyes bore deep into the pale-faced man.
“Yes..s…sir.” He stuttered fixing his eyes on the suspicious hand that was concealed under the black jacket of his superior.
“Then why is it not received yet?” Booming loudly than never before, he knew I was losing my temper fast. He sank deeper into the chair trying to maximize his distance on my face. I inched closer till I smelt his alcoholic breath as he trembled with fear.
“ Where is the chip?” I gripped his collar with my other hand. Forgetting to give him time to answer. His eyes watered badly. I loosened my grip on him, it was no use getting information out by force. I curled my lips into a perfect shape of satisfaction. Calming down he told her of what mistake he made to put it into the public mail. With eyes of understanding, he apologized and got up and headed towards the door. “You wont do it again.” He turned around and everything turned black.
He laid on his front as if to prostrate, thanking God he was spared, but it was otherwise.
25 dec:
“Merry Christmas!” Jessica screeched into my right ear. I pulled the covers over my head, trying to block out the noise. I groaned as a turned on my mobile phone as a “Merry Christmas!” message greeted me. I sighed, tossing my mobile phone aside. If anyone else said Merry Christmas to me, I will morph into scrooge and be a killjoy. I stared at the pitch-black sky, what time was it? The glowing digital numbers that told me it was way before my usual morning sunrise. Oh shit! I was supposed to place the laptop back into the packaging…I jumped out of the bed and hurried over to my desk. I grabbed Ski from his hiding placed and opened the wrapper, placed the gift inside and stuffed back the foam, closed the bag and rewrapped the gift for the third time. I gave myself a pat on back. I freshened up myself and got to the Christmas tree. I was as usual, the last to arrive. My parents, the ‘headache’ and Ate Lynn was there.
“ Sorry, I’m late.” I could see my sister edging to rip open the first present she saw. My sister’s eyes pleaded my parents to start opening her presents. My mum and dad agreed. Sounds of shredding paper followed.
I picked up the presents, which had my names on it and ripped open the first one. I was utterly disgusted. A whole set of make-up items complete with clips and all. I looked at whom it was from. It read:
A perfect set like this for a special growing girl.
Lots of love,
Aunt Candy
My sister was eyeing me with envy that led me to a brilliant idea. I could trade one lipstick for cold hard cash, fresh from her pocket money. I could almost smell the fragrance of the notes in my hand. I went for my next present. I tore it up and smiled at the gift my dad gave me. Pellets and a huge stack of target cards for my air shooting! I was running low on my supply after going to the shooting range on a weekly basis, since the holidays. I chose my next victim. Tearing up its flesh to reveal a genuine American football with the famous brand name “Wilson” on the ball. Now my collection is complete! Ashley always bought the best suitable gift ever. The other gifts were nice and I looked at the faces of my parents. Pure joy. I fell disappointed. They did not feel that anything was amiss? Maybe they did not buy that present for me. Maybe it was not from them but from someone else, like my grandparents. No, they already gave me my Christmas present: A red packet with wads of money in it. They too knew what I loved most.
Time passed by and the sun was high up in the air. The dim glow of the Christmas tree did not glow as brilliantly than before. My dad was watching the football match between the Black Skii and the Golden Eagles as they battled on. Curious, I crept to my dad’s side.
“Is this the real ‘live’ game time telecasted?” I asked out of inquisitiveness. My dad shut me up as he pointed to the right of the television screen. I followed his finger to the right and “LIVE” was written. My eyes were on the ball was ball but my mind was not. The time was almost up and the score was 8 and 28. My heart sank. SO it was just my mind playing tricks on me. But alas! The ball went into the hoop as the sound of the whistle followed suit. I gave a satisfactory grin and walked back to my room. I was tempted to tell Ashley, but decided against it.
What did it mean? I was still in shock of what had happened as I stared blankly into the computer screen. I could swear on my life I saw the results before it actually happened. Did I have some sort of talent like Isaac Mendez, in Heroes? I shuddered at that thought. It wasn’t possible. My eyes fell on the corner of my computer. That was it! Yatta! I quickly checked the time, it was the 28th of December 2007. Was it possible if I could…My hands danced on the keyboard as I quickly looked for the stock markets, was it possible…I looked at the whole table of green arrows and red ones. I grabbed a newspaper next to my bed and tore the middle page out. I compared the results and at the same time dialed my mum.
“ The KPB.” My heart pounded my ears.
“Are you sure? They have always been going down since…”
“Exactly, it is the cheapest. You will not regret this investment.” I reassured her. I place the phone down and sighed. This would confirm my assumptions. But I didn’t stop there.
The page of the Premier Football League appeared before my eyes. I looked at the latest match. It was between Chelsea and Manchester United, it was a tie. I did some liaisons with Fadzli and Hong Yong it was done. I cracked my knuckles as I brushed my conscience aside.
28th dec:
The day after Christmas I had this outdoor camp in some deserted place that nobody wants to go to for two whole days! No television, no nice food, no comfy bed and worst of all, no computer! I really couldn’t stand it there. Plus they robbed me off of my money. Sandfly bites littered my hands and legs. The only comfort I had was thinking about what was ahead. Did the stocks of KPB really go up? Or was it a façade? I sighed as more thoughts of doubt entered my mind as I slept with the bloodthirsty mosquitoes on that night. But my first victory cry was confirmed by my mother’s sudden holler.
“Oh my goodness!” My mother hugged me. We actually got double the amount we invested in!” My tired eyes could barely open but I knew what she was talking about. I rubbed out the sleep in my eyes as I waited for the next call.
“Bloody hell.” He spat the words out. I couldn’t help smiling to myself. He took out his wallet and placed it back into his pocket.
“We made a deal.” I firmly said. He took out $40 dollars from his wallet and reluctantly placed it into my hands. I grabbed the notes and hurried away. I could just picture Hong Yong face, scrunched up in anguish. I managed a chuckle out as I headed for my next victim. The game has just started.
“Money?” I held my hand to his face. His eyes avoided me as he pressed red notes into my hand. I pocketed my win and gave a friendly slap on Fadzli’s back. He smiled for half a second and continued his moody disposition. “ Come on, it’s only forty dollars. Peanuts for a guy like you.” He sat in silence. “ Well… I could give you 10% of what I have.” I took out four bucks and waved it infront of him. He pushed it away from his face and complained.
“ Manchester United hasn’t won Chelsea since the time…I drank milk!” Oh so that’s why he was so moody about.
“ Well at least they won one premiership league in 1890.” Although that was quite pathetic, seeing that Chelsea won 30 times more. But I decided to keep that comment to myself, seeing that his ego has already been destroyed by me. I left him alone to sulk while I indulged myself with a Ben and Jerry’s ice cream with my Yusof Bin Ishaks.
My phone vibrated as a drop of ice cream stained my shirt. Ashley’s voice greeted me.
“What have you been up to?” A hint of anger was detected from him. I licked rough my chocolate chip dough.
“Nothing that seems out of the ordinary.”
“So that forty dollars in your pocket is not out of the ordinary?” Dang. He guessed it.
“Yeah, I just took out money from the bank.”
“ Don’t lie to me. I know exactly what you just did.” I realized that Fadzli was one of Ashley’s posse. No point lying now.
“Okay, so what if I did?” I said defensively.
“How did you get it?”
“I got it from Fadzli?”
“Cut the crap.” I stopped licking my ice cream. Ashley rarely said any crude words, and if he did I knew it meant business.
“I know you wont believe me but Ski can tell the future.”
“Who is Ski?”
“ The Viao.” There was silence on the other end. I continued on. “He can tell the future.” I repeated it in case he did not get it correctly. Silence still hung at the other end of the line. “ If I were to change the computer time to the normal time, it would go forward in time. And if figured…if it was true, I could be swimming in 20 pools of money in less than a year…by looking at the stocks before hand.” I am in big trouble. I moved my phone from my right ear, away from hearing distance. I could still her him shouting at me faintly.

A bald man sitting at the same ice-cream parlor stared at the comical girl holding her mobile phone away, through his tinted glasses.
“I’ve got her.”
